DORCHESTER, MA — In November, Club members were invited to the premier of the new movie “Instant Family” starring former BGCD member, Mark Walhberg. The movie is about a couple who find themselves in over their heads after stumbling into the world of foster care adoption and end up adopting three children.

Our Club members had a fantastic time at the movie premier and had some great reviews of the movie! Many thanks to Mark Wahlberg and the Mark Walhberg Youth Foundation for making this amazing opportunity available to our members.

IBEW Local 103 and NECA Host BGCD as Bullpen Buddies at Fenway Park: Ten very lucky BGCD members attended a Boston Red Sox game last week thanks to the generosity of IBEW Local 103 and NECA.

Our members had the chance to go on the field, watch batting practice and also had the opportunity to meet and receive autographs from Boston Red Sox players Brock Holt, Steve Pearce, Xander Boegarts, Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez. Each member received a gift bag with a t-shirt, program, baseball and other memorabilia making the entire experience truly unforgettable.

Citi Boch Center Visits BGCD: In what has become an annual summer event, teens from the Citi Boch Center visited BGCD to put on a performance followed by a large group workshop. Each year the group puts on a performance based on a relevant social topic and follows that with small group workshops to help explain the background and significance of the performance.

Boch Center is committed to inspiring and igniting a greater appreciation for art, culture, and creativity through its education and community outreach initiatives for many years. These
initiatives strive to make the arts more accessible for the greater community, and to highlight the
tremendous impact of arts, culture, and creativity in our everyday lives.

Thanks to our friends at the Citi Boch Center for visiting again this summer.

BGCD Wraps up Tween Inclusion Summer Program: This summer BGCD hosted a four week Inclusion Program for our Tween members. The group took a variety of off-site trips that included Hale Reservation, Rock Spot, Loco Taqueria, Kayaking, Fenway Park, Patriots Place, and much more.

The program included a variety of cultural, recreational and educational sites, outdoor exploration, fitness & nutrition activities. It is a program designed to accomodate and include youth at an age where they have outgrown traditional summer camp, but not quite old enough to begin working a summer job. It is also inclusive of our members with disabilites.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester returned to Camp Northbound for the 13th year last week. Each summer 150 campers and 25 staff members come together in Bridgton, Maine to grow, learn about themselves and others, and to have a great time!

Campers participated in tons of fun activities such as water sports, rock climbing, arts and crafts, archery, hiking, campfires and more! Campers usually return year after year, making the camp community consistent and the Northbound camp spirit strong.

The camp is run by a combined staff of Camp Micah counselors and Club staff who work together to make Camp Northbound an exciting, meaningful, and memorable experience for everyone.

Our Club members had an absolute blast this year at Camp Northbound! Thank you to Camp Micah and the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation for making this trip possible.

BGCD is proud to partner with Elevate Youth to offer outdoor adventure trips to our members. To kick off the partnership, Elevate Youth hosted teen members taking part in the Safe Summer Streets program on a Fishing trip in Boston Harbor. Our members learned how to retrieve lobster traps and even caught a few fish themselves! On the following day, a group of members had a blast learning to surf at Nantasket Beach. Our members were provided all of the equipment and were given lessons by professionals. Our thanks to the Elevate Youth team for offering our members these amazing off-site opportunities!

Bank of America Hosts Financial Literacy Workshop at BGCD: Volunteers from Bank of America visited Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester this week to host Financial Literacy workshops presenting their signature Better Money Habits curriculum for those teens taking part in the Career Prep program.

The volunteers covered topics such as budgeting, credit, savings and much more. These informative sessions, led by experts in their respective fields will help ensure the participating teens are armed with the knowledge they need to manage their finances moving forward.

Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street visits BGCD: Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Education Director, Rosie Gill, stopped by the Club’s Safe Summer Streets program to lead a class for teens last week.

Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street and BGCD have been working in partnership over the past 2 years to teach nutrition and culinary skills to Club teens and will be doing so again this upcoming school year. Our
members enjoy having the chance to learn and improve upon valuable skills such as these through the
programming we offer here at the Club.

BGCD Kings Classic: Join us on September 19th for the 1st Annual BGCD Kings Classic! This fun filled bowling tournament at Kings Seaport will feature a team competition, music, games, raffles, prizes and more!

We will have 12 sponsored teams, each competing to be the Championship winner of our tournament.

General admission tickets are available for $25 in advance on Eventbrite or $30 at the door. Tickets include one drink, dinner buffet and more. Doors open at 6 PM.

All proceeds will benefit the BGCD through the Rodman Ride for Kids. Kings Seaport is located at 60

Gray, Gray & Gray LLP Volunteers at BGCD: Fifteen volunteers from Gray, Gray & Gray LLP stopped by our Marr Clubhouse last Thursday to help paint part of our Early Education Center. We are so thankful for their help, the project turned out great!

The Gray, Gray & Gray Charitable Foundation also organized the assembly of 50 backpacks with school supplies to support our Club members. We are so appreciative of their team members for helping to ensure our children have the essential items needed for their education, especially with the start of the school year right around the corner!

Making a difference by actively supporting causes impacting the health and wellness of the community is closely keeping with the mission of the Gray, Gray & Gray Charitable Foundation, we appreciate their partnership.

Club Members Participate in Challenger Junior Police Academy: Club members who are part of BGCD’s summer program had the chance to take part in the exciting Challenger Junior Police Academy this year.

Members got to engage in plenty of fun activities including a tour of the Boston Police Department Headquarters, a trip to Boston Bowl, an excursion to the Museum of Science along with a ride aboard one of Boston’s local Duck Boats.

Another highlight was their trip to Patriot Place for a tour of the Hall of Fame and the chance to catch a glimpse of the Patriots mini-camp! Thank you to the Boston Police Department for giving our members such great opportunities for learning and new experiences throughout the year.

BGCD On-site Summer Program Comes to an End: Friday was the last day of our summer program which ended with a fun-filled carnival for our Club members. It featured a dunk tank, bounce house, slime making, and ice cream from the Boston Police Department Operation Hoodsie Cup Truck! The MBTA Police K-9 Unit also stopped by to give our members an impressive demonstration on how the dogs do their job and apprehend criminals.

With back to school season right around the corner, orientations for new members for the 2018-2019 school year will take place on Wednesday, August 22nd & Wednesday 29th, at 5:45 PM. Parents who have already completed a membership form will only need to complete a one page re-registration sheet and submit it with their child’s $5 membership fee.

Over 50 BGCD members and chaperones were the guests of the Dorchester Yacht Club for their Annual Summer Cruise & BBQ. Members also got to do some sightseeing during their tour of Boston Harbor.

BGCD Competes in Dell Technologies Charity Shootout: Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester President and CEO, Bob Scannell, and WBZ news anchor, David Wade, had the chance to compete on behalf of BGCD at the Dell Technologies Charity Shootout at Fenway Park last week.

At this golf style tournament, competitors were given one swing from behind home plate in an effort to shoot a hole-in-one into the outfield – anyone able to make it having the opportunity to win 1 million dollars for their charity.

While no one got a hole-in-one, the shot closest to the pin won an incredible $25,000. Bob and David both came close, but Steve Burton took the winning swing, earning $25,000 for the Hockomock Area YMCA. Congratulations to all of the participants and charities of the day!

BGCD Holds Club-Wide Talent Show: This past week at the Club, summer program members of all ages participated in a Club-wide talent show. Performances included incredible singing demonstrations, many creative dance routines, as well as a few other unique talent displays.

Club members were extremely proud and happy for the chance to show off some of their abilities and had tons of fun collaborating with one another to make for an amazing overall show, especially with our regular summer programming soon coming to an end.

BGCD Members Compete in NFTE Entrepreneurship Challenge: Fifteen Club members of BGCD entered their business plans in the NFTE Biz-Academy Entreprenuership Challenge last Friday.

Throughout the 2 week summer Biz-Academy, each student came up with a business idea of their own ranging from an actual product, to an app, to a service. Each plan explains exactly what the product is, all of the expenses and costs, who their market is and how they’ll attract customers.

Judah, the winner, will now be entered into the video round online against all of the other students who won Biz-Academies across the country. Winners of this video round move on to NFTE’s National Competition in NYC against students who won regional competitions during their school year programs.

BPD & BGCD Olympics Event: The Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester, Boston Police Department and several other local Boys & Girls Clubs are
joining forces to put on an amazing Olympic and World Cup themed event!

This Friday August 3rd at Madison Park in Roxbury, different Club teams will rotate through various stations with the chance to participate and compete in tons of fun activities such as an obstacle course, limbo, around the world, turbo javelin, corn hole and more!

At the event we will be joined by the BPD Officers, Special Olympics and New England Revolution, who will assist in running all of the numerous activities. The event will also feature a cookout with great food options thanks to Fresh Truck and the BPD Ice Cream Truck.

Ride With Us: As part of the Rodman Disney for Kids Program, 150 children will travel to Disney World in Orlando, Florida this August with BGCD for an once in a lifetime unforgettable experience. The program is funded by the incredible generosity of our Board Member, Don Rodman, and the many friends who support his efforts. This gives members of our Clubs opportunites and memories that will last a lifetime. In addition to the Disney for Kids Progam, Don Rodman also sponsors and supports Theatre for Kids and the Rodman Ride for Kids.

BGCD Board Chair Lee Michael Kennedy Honored: Lee Michael Kennedy of Lee Kennedy Co Inc was awarded the Boston Business Journal’s CEO Social Leadership Award. The award is being presented in September at the Corporate Citizenship Awards at Fenway Park.

Lee has served as BGCD Board Chair since 2011 and first became a Board Member in 2001, making him a longtime supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester.

Lee has helped thousands of children at BGCD and dedicated his time and resources to ensure our children have every opportunity to succeed. We are so thankful for him here at the Club and congratulate him on this well deserved recognition. Check out the full article at https://www.bizjournals.com.

College Alumni Night Cruise: Come and speak with past BGCD members about their college experiences after high school!

The BGCD College Alumni Night Cruise will take place on Wednesday, August 1st and is a great opportunity for Dorchester teens to hear first hand what navigating life after high school is like.

The event will include a panel of excited Alumni happy to answer questions and there will be plenty of time for mingling with friends. BGCD will provide transportation to the boat along with great music and delicious food. This event is best suited for ages 14-18.

Safe Summer Streets Career Fair: All are welcome to join us on Wednesday, July 25th at 6 PM for some teen career exploration! There will be professionals from a variety of fields such as law enforcement, journalism, healthcare, military, sports, EMS, mental health, business and the trades (just to name a few!) who will be sharing their stories and giving one-on-one advice to teens.

Stop by the Marr Clubhouse at 35 Deer Street in the Gym for a chance to learn all about the kinds of classes and programs you should be considering to prepare for your career. There will be a light dinner, raffles, prizes and tons of fun!

Summer Program Kick-Off: Our Club members enjoyed a busy, fun-filled week as we got started with our 2018 Summer Programming. There’s so much to do here at BGCD!

Just this week members went on group field trips to TMX Boxing Academy, City Hall Plaza and on a Surfing/Fishing trip.

The Safe Summer Streets program, now in it’s 29th year, also allows our teen members the opportunity to take part in programming until 11:00 p.m. weekdays. Moving forward there will be a Basketball League, Open Swim, Career Fair, Spa Night, College Alumni Night Cruise, Cooking Classes with Milk Street Kitchen, Six Flags trip and more!

Rodman Ride for Kids: On September 22nd Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester will particpate in the Rodman Ride for Kids. The Ride is an opportunity to take part in some outdoor fun and to help kids.

The Rodman Ride is a 25, 50, or 100-mile bike ride, with a virtual ride option. We are currently recruiting members to join our teams. 100% of money raised will directly benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester.
