Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester President & CEO, Bob Scannell, and wife, Mary Kinsella Scannell, VP of Education at Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester both received the Boston Irish Honors this past October for their dedicated work in the Dorchester community.

The Dorchester Reporter describes, “Bob Scannell and Mary (Kinsella) Scannell have spent their adult lives in service to the families and children of Boston’s largest neighborhood. They are the heart and soul of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester, where they serve as president and vice-president, respectively. While raising a beautiful family of their own, the Scannells have essentially become surrogate parents to thousands of kids and teens in the city. Together, they have created a safe haven for city kids to learn, play, stay healthy, and prepare for higher education and careers— all while having the time of their lives. The Scannells exemplify the best qualities of our Irish-American ideals: selflessness, humility, and a resolve to stay the course through adversity.”

Congratulations Bob & Mary!

BGCD hosted 18 Colleges and post-grad programs for our high school students last week at our annual Destination U Fair. Members had the opportunity to mingle with each of the
schools to learn more about admission requirements, student life, majors offered, and more.

In addition, there were options available for those interested in pursuing their goals through
programs like City Year, Year Up and many other service related opportunities. Our partners at American Student Assistance were on hand to offer support to all attendees. Thank you to all the schools and programs that attended.

Special thanks also to the evening’s keynote speaker, Eric Esteves, former Director of the Social Innovation Fund and The Boston Foundation. In his inspirational words, he focused on encouraging all members to step outside of their comfort zones and to take advantage of every opportunity.

Sunday Night Football Bus Comes to BGCD: The Sunday Night Football Bus, sponsored by NBC-Sports and Comcast, stopped by our Clubhouse last Friday in advance of the New England Patriots hosting the Green Bay Packers last week!

Members got the chance to decorate footballs, received complimentary give-a-ways, toured the bus and participated in plenty of fun interactive activities! Members interacted with Patriots cheerleaders as well as New England mascot, Pat the Patriot, and even pretended to give a live news broadcast using some of the equipment on the bus! We are so thankful to NBC Sports for stopping by our Clubhouse and giving our members this unforgettable experience. Six year old Eithan Anannon was named the winner of the painted football contest and will get to have his ball remain on the bus for the rest of the year!
